Pit lane positions & car numbers changing in between seasons

Our season finished yesterday & the champion is being shown in 24th place in the new standings which means he will miss out on his pit lane position.
He used a new driver in the last race of the season as he had already won the champ, could it have been to do with this?

its a good sized advantage to be in no.20's, no.1 box is a nightmare except in Aus,China,Silverstone.
