Driver DNF but awarded 2nd

Hi guys.
Sorry to be here again, but the new season started with another juicy bug:
Driver in 2nd ran out of fuel at last lap, slowed to a crawl and got overtaken by everybody else on track.
Finally came to a stop at the exit of the last chicane (Australia), miles from the finish line.
Result shows "fuel" instead of his finishing time.
So the bug?
Well, he got 18 points and sits in 2nd in the standings.

Any ideas?

I think he was on the lead lap still coming onto the last lap. The others from 3rd down were already lapped. So that is why he was classified 2nd. Amazing that in a 50% race (I saw it was a mixed conditions race though), the guy in 3rd was already lapped.
