It was clearly for me that I was 2nd on the finish line, but after the race I found my driver 3rd in the protocol. What could cause such a bug?

I have this before. It can happen when 2 drivers finish within the same tenth of a second, and later when the official race results are declared, places can be swapped around.

It might happen when one car overtakes the other in less time before reaching the finish line than the current lag/latency between server and race viewer clients. The race viewers have to predict the current state of the race to some extent in between server updates to show a smooth race and also once the cars cross the finish line they are removed from the race and it looks like the viewer stops to accept status updates for them. So if one car manages on the server to get ahead but the information doesn't reach your, or also other managers, client(s) before the cars cross the line then that would explain this situation because the final result is of course the race calculation on the server there the cars already switched positions.

It also might happen if you manage to overtake on your client but the delay between your actions and the information about them reaching the server means your car did not make it there, but I don't know if the clients are actually wait for the server confirming the use of KERS or so before applying it.

Yeah I also thought of it as a latency/ping bug. The situation was that me and the other guy had been burning our boosts out the whole final lap long, my driver was going right after his one but I got more boost left so I managed to overtake him right on the finish line. Disappointing result after all as this is a championship fight and every missed opportunity to gain additional points is a huge fail.

This happens from time to time when you finish very close, I've experienced it at least twice already.
Some time ago Yunus explained in another thread that it's a known issue. It's a synchronization issue between the simulation and the race viewer.
