Hi, do the cars reset every season in terms of research etc ?

Hi Matt

The short answer is... Yes the car design resets at the end of the season.

Seeing as you appear to be relatively new to the game there's quite a lot to learn about optimising next season design. It's all about your CD, their star rating in combination with their strength and weakness. In a nutshell, during the current season, each race your "active" CD generates 1/17th of the starting design for next season. The amount of design points are dependant upon the star rating but they generate slightly less for their area of weakness and slightly more for strength.

If you want to learn more read this Next Seasons Car

Also really useful reads for new managers are Joey's two guides:
iGP Manager: Beginners guide (July 2017) and
iGP Manager: Advanced guide (July 2017)

Sorry, just to confirm I’ve got this right. If my CD has 5 star and strength is handling. I set my research to handling for 6 races then bin them off for another strength in say aero. I then do then same for the others and benefit in the new season?

Matt.
Don't confuse research with design.

Research:
Research happens every race and improves this seasons design. Research power is determined by a combination of your team level (the lower the level the higher the research power) and the star rating of your Technical Director (more stars equals higher research power). You decide before each race which design attribute(s) you want to research, then after the race your car will have improved by the difference in design between your dp and the strongest team multiplied by research power (rounded up to the nearest whole number).

Example 1: Your research power when researching a single attribute = 50%
You decide to research braking, your team has 38dp and the strongest team in your league has 51 dp.
After the race you will see that your braking design is now 45 dp because research was (51 - 38) x 50% = 6.5 which rounds up to 7 and is added to the 38 you had before research was applied.

Example 2: You decide to research two attributes, braking and downforce so your research power per attribute is halved to 25%
Using the same figures for simplicity, in both attributes the strongest car is 51 dp and your car is 38 dp.
Research gain for each attribute is (51 - 38) x 25% = 3.25 which rounds up to 4.

So by researching two attributes (example 2) you have gained 8 dp whereas researching only one attribute you only gained 7 dp.

Then, just to throw a curved ball into the calculation, if you research your CD strength you will get a higher research power but if you research CD weakness it reduces your research power. Unfortunately this increase / decrease in power isn't displayed so you'll have to work it out over time by making notes.

Design:
This is generated race by race in the current season and is applied to your next season car. Each race your "active" CD generates 1/17th of next season starting design. The link I provided above goes into detail but in a nutshell the more stars your CD has the better your starting design next season.

These aren't actual values but to explain the concept imagine your CD generates 2dp per race, 3dp for their strength and 1dp for weakness. Assuming you only have one CD the cars will roll out in Australia with:
17 x 2 = 34 dp in six attributes, 17 x 3 = 51 dp in strength attribute and 17 x 1 = 17 dp in weakness attribute.

Now imagine that the design cap for Australia is only 40 dp. Your CD has generated 51 for one of the attributes, those 11 points above the cap are wasted. This is where having more than one CD with different strengths can be beneficial. By swapping them mid season you can get more than one attribute up to the cap because you don't waste design.

Phew... draw breath.
Having said all of that you can forget about it for the next few seasons because you're new to the game and will be levelling up quickly. Each time you level up your CD star rating will fall so if you are attempting to employ multiple 5 star CDs you are going to need to dig deep and spend real money to fund the regular staff changes you will need to make.

I hope that makes sense.

And if you start up a brand new league everything gets reset to Zero also!! I just got caught out with that one!! Will be awhile now to work all that back up!
