This is an odd one. In practice for my race today I posted a time half a second quicker than any other lap I did in the practice session, and was better for fuel and tyres. This would be all well and fine if it was the optimum set up, but it wasn't. So can the driver be wrong about the optimum setup, or was this just luck?

So I should stick with what the driver says then?

The best you can do is to do some more laps with that setup to see if it's actually consistent with those laptimes. People always told me it was luck when I asked this so I have no personal experience.

I have experienced this in the past, ran a few tests with one of my driver's during the season and basically, what the driver says is their best set up, is in fact best for that driver, running another set up is consistently slower. Just keep in mind that driver's won't always give you their best time during practice.
