Better yet, focus on one area at a time(usually Acceleration>Braking>Downforce>Handling>Cooling>Reliability>Fuel Economy>Tyre Economy) to catch up to your rivals.
Don't forget to make sure your CD and TD are no less than 4 1/2 stars and the same level or higher than you are as a player, otherwise your research will loose value by the start of next season. Not essential, but definitely helpful.
In addition you must develop your HQ to enhance your cars research. Design>Manufacturing>Technology>Youth Academy>Simulator>Office and Hospitality. I wouldn't bother investing any time or cash with Office and Hospitality till you've maxed out all the others.
Carry as little fuel as possible; the more fuel on-board, the heavier the overall weight of the car.
Do your best not to go past 30% tyre ware on most tyres. Super Softs being the exception where the performance cap is closer to 40%. Download the igp calculator from google play to assist you.
