My engines tyres and fuel give me a +14 in acceleration, but the stats showed never go over 100. Does it mean I should stop researching acceleration once it reaches 86?

Yup that's right. The total of those can be max used as 100 so if you have acc at 100 and use suppliers to give you additional points in acc then you are wasting those points.

Hang on here M S, I make a habit of maxing out the big 4 asap. Are you suggesting I change suppliers to help me with some of the other research areas afterwards?

If you use suppliers to give you additional points in acc then stop before 100 on actual design points to make up the tally of 100 so if you use merc engine which is  +10 acc the actual design points at 90 with + 10 from supplier gives you 100 but if you add additional actual design points to let's say 95 then have supplier + 10 that won't give you 105 it stays at 100 so you are wasting 5 design points which can be used in other areas. Now do you change your supplier or do you stop at 90 that's upto you.

The little details that tend to slip by the cracks... thanks for the breakdown.

I assume if you change supplier you lose you additional points from the supplier?
so if you had Murk +10 would you lose that +10 ?

@Chaz
Short answer is... Yes
Assume you have 90 core dp in acceleration and using engine supplier Murk (+10 Acceleration / -6 Fuel Economy) your car overview page would indicate Acceleration=100.
If you now switched engine supplier to Rednote (+10 Downforce / -5 Acceleration) your overview page would indicate Acceleration=85
