With the change over of the new season all my car attributes reset. Is that normal? Doesn’t it defeat the purpose of building up your cars?

Reset between seasons is normal.
No it doesn't defeat the purpose of building up your car. All cars are reset to a value which depends on last seasons CD(s), their level/star rating, strength and weakness. It then gives you another seventeen races to try to find the optimum development strategy. If design didn't reset you would have maximum in all attributes after one season, no research possible and nowhere to put the dp that is generated by your design HQ.
