Research points effects

Can anyone tell me when research points gained during a race take effect towards performance? For instance, if I have ‘acceleration’ checked and I gain 8 points during the race, does that gain improve performance during that race or not until the next race?

You gain the research points once a race has finished so it will contribute to the next race.
