Chief Designer Progress

Since I'm new to the game and racing in my first ever season, I've got a question to the more experienced managers out here regarding the Chief Designer position.

My 4,5* rated CD participated in the first 11 races of the season, but due to my level up progress, he slowly decreased in star value. I've now purchased a new CD suitable for my current rank to improve my design for the following season.

Do I have to keep my old CD in my team in order to maintain the progress he made throughout the first races or can I just sell him off the market to save his wage?

Welcome to the game. 

No need to keep the older CD, you can get rid, and the ‘work’ they did will still benefit you at the start of the next season.
