I was wondering why I always start a season so far behind in car stats and the gap gets bigger the longer the season goes and yes I know how upgrading and skills work

I suppose the first question is... How do you know you're so far behind your competitors, do they share their design with you?

Start of season design is determined by your CD and the number of races in the previous season. If you have a CD the same level as your team you should begin the season with the maximum total dp possible and nobody in your league / tier should have higher total dp than you.

Regarding getting progressively further behind as the season unfolds. This can only be because either you have sub standard CD and TD or your competitors are using a more effective research strategy than you.

Try to wait to use your design points until the very last second. I have recently started doing this, while practicing before upgrading. It has worked pretty well so far. For starting off the season bad, try changing your CD weakness to reliability or cooling. Fuel economy can have an effect in the race.

Why would leaving using design points to last minute make a difference?

If your design is good enough to be the best in one or more attributes then applying points later makes it harder for the competition to react to it with their own and maximise their research.
Doing practice before applying points, or even repair the car, is called sandbagging (from real teams using added weight like sandbags) to hide the real performance.

Tip... It is possible to alter your research strategy after qualifying lock down. Refresh the Review page shortly after lockdown to discover where those sneaky "last minute" developers have assigned their dp then adjust your research accordingly.

I know, but you can't tailor your design with research in mind to gain an extra point here or there.

Sorry Frank, I wasn't contradicting you, what you say is of course correct. I was just giving a tip to the many newer managers who don't realise they can adjust their research strategy after qualifying lockdown to cater for the "last minute" developers.
