On a lot of phones that long sidebar list didn't fit on the screen. While it was just a smooth subconscious swipe to get to the bottom part on some (like with mine and thus I found the old way more comfortable and straightforward as well), on other devices it caused quite some painful scrolling and thus disrupting the gaming experience. So the UI is changing to be a better compromise between most devices.
