Paulo Maldini wrote a great post in another thread regarding boost and when to use it.
I can’t be bothered trying to find it but if you really need to know, it’s only 3 paragraphs and explains it perfectly so is worth looking for πŸ˜‰

It was a post in someone else’s thread, but you are lucky! I sent a copy to my friend, here it is...

“Some tracks have areas where boosting is more beneficial than other areas, it's just a matter of discovery, which you get from experience playing the game. When you get to elite try to keep a close eye on the top drivers and watch how and where they're using boost. This way you'll learn the best ways to apply it. Although it can sometimes be very situational like for example you need to catch up to a car ahead to catch drs for that lap which is very important as most time advantage is gained through drs. This will be one of the most common ways you'll see short burst boost being used in most races. Another tip I can give you is to try not to use it approaching breaking points into corners, you want to take advantage in acceleration for boost to be most effective. Where I can tell you it's most beneficial to use on most tracks are areas where you have medium to long sweeping S's as these tend to give you most bang for your buck! Also, try not to use it when your car has already reached maximum speed as this will just be a waste. Hope this helps 😁”

Thanks Paul, that guide has let me know that I'm doing it right. And it's true, certain little points of certain tracks give you an extra kick. One I know is the hairpin on to the first big straight at Abu Dhabi

When breaking, it is effective as well. Not when approaching breaking point, but when breaking it can be.
The curly bit in Malaysia just before the two big straights also is a good place to boost
