How does qualification work?

I don't understand what happens, if I choose to start heavy, consequently I will start from the bottom of the grid, but I don't understand that when I'm up to 5 laps lighter than my opponents and on an SS tire, I keep starting at the bottom of the grid, while my opponents are fine. heavier ones start in the front rows.
What criteria are used in qualif? This is without logic!!!

The fuel of your first stint does not influence qualifying. What matters are the tyres of your first stint and a little your driver abilities and your car performance. The rest is pure randomness and I'm fine with it. Otherwise every race  would be boring.
