Does anyone know if Ubuntu Linux running Java 8 will successfully run the players?

I can access everything but the race viewers. Once that goes mobile I should be alright. Installing JAVA 8 on my system is a little bit of work so I guess I'll avoid that and just wait for awhile.

Sorry to hear that Jay. The only thing I was able to find on the forum was this thread:

eing realistic, you'll be waiting a long time for the viewers to be rebuilt in something other than Java, depending on how things go. But it is high on our list to look in to that, and mobile support for the viewers. No matter high we put it on our list though, the work itself will likely take a couple of months at least. These kind of things are no small task.

In the meantime, I do know that some people have been able to get it running on Ubuntu, perhaps PM any of them if you can find them!

success. It wasn't that hard after all. I am able to run the free viewer. This link wil hold your hand through the process.

After one race I will subscribe and try the 2D viewer.  I only loaded the viewer in spectate mode.

That's great news, Jay. However, we strongly recommend using version 7 until version 8 is officially released in March 2015. Java 8 is currently a beta release. I don't know if downgrading is a problem in Ubuntu, or if you have the same glitches in Linux as Windows for that matter. If you don't have any problems, feel free to stick with Java 8.

P.S. That guide should come in handy for me. I've got an old laptop running Ubuntu but it never ran Java. I'll get iGP going on it so I can see for myself how it works. Cheers!

I tried java 7 first using "Iced Tea" but there was a problem that I didn't have enough expertice to troubleshoot. ( it loaded only Java 7 u 65 and I couldn't figure how to get it to update to  71 )  So I tried this Java 8 solution. In Ubuntu 14.04 it is supposed to automatically update just like it would with Windows. I'm hoping for the best.

The web page that I linked says how to switch back to Java 7

I'm running as Jay Andrews but still have a subscription. The 2D viewer works on my old Ubuntu laptop with the Java 8 set up mentioned here.

I think java 8 was released in March 2014. And is the default download option on java.com. Java 9 will start the beta release in 2015.

Not entirely without glitches in 2D. Viewer hangs when "full detail timechart" button is pushed. And sizing the screen doesn't work.  I have to size the screen before the "connecting" display comes up or the screen goes green with sound but no other display.

Nothing I do gets Chrome to use Java in Ubuntu.  Nothing I do gets Firefox to revert to Java 7. Java 8 works in Firefox with the same glitches mentioned elswhere. Useable though, as long as you don't try to move the chat box or resize the window after the display is showing.

Java 8 and Ubuntu has gained some functionality, i noticed today. Zoom in now works without freezing. And full detail race stats usually does not freeze the display now,
Occasionally full detail freezes the screen. If you run zoom and full detail it works better if you zoom first then click full detail. Still can't resize the screen or move the chat box without freezing.

A work around appears to be Full screen browser (which I usually don't run) Open the free viewer in a new tab with full detail time chart then open the 2D viewer in another tab. The viewer then displays properly in full size mode and I can switch to the free viewer in the other tab when I want that.

Everything is working with Ubuntu and Java 8. Also I can open 2D races from two different accounts with  the same browser.
