Today I got Chrome 42. In this version NPAPI support has been disabled by default. That means, java plugin will no longer work!
See https://www.chromium.org/developers/npapi-deprecation
There is a workaround: until September 2015 you can enable NPAPI manually. Visit chrome://flags/#enable-npapi With Chrome 45 NPAPI will be gone for good!

You have got Chrome version 42? Did you restart Chrome after it got updated to 42?
If so, you should have similiar issues I experienced earlier today: no plugins running. Neither here nor at https://java.com/de/download/installed8.jsp?detect=jre

yes and no, updated no restart

I have pinned this thread.
It's really incredible how many problems Java creates for itself. I can't wait to be rid of it.

Funny fact: I got a Java update yesterday, too. In the process I was asked, if I wanted to deinstall outdated Java7u75. I clicked yes.
After finish I realized, Chrome does no longer support plugins, see above. Solved that, still no Java in Chrome. Mysterious! Then I realized, I have got Java 8 only in its 32-bit variant. Since my Win7 and Chrome are 64-bit, I need 64-bit Java, too. I don't know if 7u75 was 64-bit or if I had a Java8-64bit which has been deinstalled in the update process. It is really PITA!

Runescape is browser game built in Java, so they are experiencing the same thing right now with many users using Google Chrome unable to play. They have millions of users. In the long-run Chrome plans to drop support altogether, so it's best to find another browser to view the races in, in my opinion.
I've created an official thread on this here with more clearly written instructions:

Between dropping support for many many plugins, and the general memory bloat Chrome has seen over the past year or two, it's time to start shopping around for other browsers I think. I'm back to Firefox myself, although getting the passwords out of Chrome was a massive PITA.
