Get better sponsorships by increasing your relationships with sponsors. It's pretty easy to get it to the max of 1,500,000 per sponsor in not too long

Make 1 race contracts with sponsors. Everytime you accept a contrat, rep goes one up. That way you get pretty soon max money.

wins do not equal money nor do championships.

reaching the objectives set on the join race screen = money.  If your goal says 6th and you finish 1-6 you get paid, 7th or worse you get nothing.  Set your race strategy to the goal until cash doesn't matter anymore (and it won't eventually, I am just over $1 Billion in cash) then you can try the crazy strategies and such to get wins if you want.
