They may be needed so that the game becomes a bit more up to date, and for realism.

Elves (Elf) has stopped supplying fuels for F1 teams I think, since 2009. Chevron (Chavon) has never supplied any teams ever before.

Yes but everybody will use it and don't use the others suppliers.
Other fuel providers use 12 points that fall in different ways for each attribute.
So Patrons may be:

Performance: 10

Economy: 2 

Or reverse but I don't think so I can use it in the two possibility.

By the way:
The goal is not so much to copy reality but to introduce more strategy otherwise the game would be boring , that's why for example Elves , Chavon ... are kept for more opportunities .
