Buying Engines

If I by a new engine from a supplier, how long does that engine last for ?
1 race ?
1 season ?
Or how long.
And does this have any affect on research for example if I've already maxed acceleration will a + 20 acceleration engine make any difference ? 

Until you cancel the contract and no you can’t exceed the cap.
