Unable to set email address

Having managed to get back into my account, I now need to set an email address and password in the "account" sections of settings. The game will not allow me to set a password without an email address, but also will not accept the email address previously connected to the account as valid - a message is displayed saying that the email address I am trying to use is linked to another account - even though it has only been linked to this one.

Should I set a made up email address first, to allow me to set a password, or would that still not allow me to switch back to my actual email?
