Viewing past seasons, looking at relegated teams. I would expect only teams below the relegation line to be relegated (in this case, Elite)

Yes, but not easily. As an example, in my league The iGP Champions League, Season 5 Elite, the team 'Joshi F1' was relegated from Elite, but the history shows him as above the relegation line.
Additional comments:
So, this is because a player had quit the league immediately after the final race (Varman, McLaren), meaning his team doesn't show up in the results, and all of the teams got bumped up 1 place.
