I've just finished my first season, I won it and a friend came second. Are cars were roughly the same, but as we're about to start the second season his car jumped miles ahead basically double design points in each section. How has that happened?

the car design at the start of the season, is the work of your CD during all previous season. I bet he has a better CD in terms of stars.
search for a new CD, and let him work all this season. don't worry, if you get a good CD, let's say 4.5stars and 4.5TD you will catch up in some races ;) so, nothing is lost yet! get him!
