Shall my points be lost if I release my driver?

I am about to release one of my drivers (end his contract and not extend it), who is now 2nd on the standings.

If I release him before current season ends, what will happen to my / his points?

My hope for the teams championship depends on that - please help me!

Your team points shall stay however your driver will be removed from the standings menu
