Color of pilot skill

Perhaps this has already been discussed.
The skills of the pilots are marked in red, green and gray. I understand that the higher the skill, the faster the pilot. But red is a recommendation for training a skill or a warning that the pilot will lose a lot ?

The drivers currently cannot lose skill points. It just means their skill is below 6 or 7 (1/3 of 20) grey covers the middle 1/3 and green the upper 1/3. It is a way to quickly glance and see where a driver needs the most improvement.
