When on design research page for a selected field for eg fuel economy in this instance shows my level is less than best team point but when i select the tick box to research that field it shows up as red (we are unlikely to find gains in this area).
Shouldn't i be able to gain points as my current level is lower than best team level. This has only started to happen since the new update.

The reason are the new suppliers with their higher bonus and now malus. You can only research the difference in the actual car development stats. If your actual stats are higher but you have a malus on that stat and/or the other team a bonus due to the selected suppliers then it leads to the situation you described. The total stat, after bonus and malus applied, of the other team is higher but you can't research it because you have a higher, or the same, level of car development there.
