I am level 15 and had a 5 star, level 15 CD and a 4 star, level 13 TD. Combined that gave me 4.5 star research with 56% research power. I bought a new 5 star, level 15 TD. It bumped up my research to 5 stars and my power... stayed the same... still 56%. Is this a bug? Why did I spend money and tokens to something that doesn't help my team at all?

Research power is independent of the levels of your designer and director.

The higher your manager level, the lower your research power. The designer and director come together to work towards achieving that research power potential. Thus, if they're 4 stars instead of 5, they'll be less effective in achieving your research power potential.

 But before that, when I replaced my 4 star, level 13 CD by a 5 star, level 15 CD, improving my research from 4 to 4.5 stars, my research power did go up from 48 to 56%. How does that then get explained of you say "Research power is independent of the levels of your designer and director."?

It's indepent of their level, their star rating is important. I understand your confusion as star rating is dependent on the level of the staff versus the level of the manager.

I understand it's dependent on the star rating, but what I don't understand is that my research power didn't improve when changing a 4 star TD for a 5 star TD.

Not sure if Rik wrote that correctly.

Your max possible research power gets lower as you level up.

Having a 5 star Chief Designer and 5 star Technical Director lets you achieve that max research power.

From my understanding, research power is determined by the combined star levels of your CD and TD. This star level is shown just below the Research button on the Cars page.

I've also experienced having the same research star level and research power % in spite of switching between a 4.5 star and 5 star CD.

In my case, switching from a 4 star TD to a 5 star TD increased my research star level from 4.5 to 5, but % stayed the same. I guess I'll just have to accept that I don't understand it.

ive noticed and had what Gert is describing, there appears to be no difference between when combining 4.5star TD & 4.5star research power, when u sign a 5 star TD making research 5 stars the research power % stays the same.

I'm unable to make my research 5 stars atm, but if 4.5 and 5 stars research indeed give the same %, at least I know one more area with which I could cut costs.

That is one I'm not indeed unsure of. I imagine the difference isn't much of there is any.

So based on some recent discoveries having a 4.5 star designer doesn't affect next season design, which leads me to think that having 4.5 star research power is essentially equivalent to 5 stars.
