I have looked around (and I might be going blind, so I apologize if I haven't seen the answer in plain sight) and I was wondering is there a downside to the number of laps run in practice before qualifying. For example if I run 5 laps of practice on super softs, do I qualify on the five lap old tyres or is qualifying/race start on stickers? Thank you

There's no downside. Except maybe telling your league mates what kind of training laps you're able to do if you like keeping things secret.
