Strange result

Hi in our last race there was a strange result I overtook the car infront on the last lap of the race to move into 3rd place on the run down to the 1st corner I was infront the entire lap but turning into the last corner I was overtaken and finished 4th 

The issue that I can’t work out is that my lap time was 0.4 quicker then his lap time 

If I was infront of him and did the final lap quicker how is it possible for him to overtake me?

Well based on the fact your last race was at Italy, I'd say drs allowed you to close the gap and temporarily pass him at the start of the final lap..  And since the drs zone for Italy starts right before the start/finish line and end well after it, using drs has a larger affect at the start of a lap then it does at the end of a lap.

Hi Jim,
Joshua is right, you were still behind him at the start of the last lap, gained a lot of time on the straight by the powerful DRS, but in the end he just beat you to it.
If you look at the detailed race results, extract pasted below, you see that you were 0.458s behind him at the start of the last lap. You were 0.436s faster than him on the last lap and thus finished 0.022s behind him in the end. It was very close, but just not enough.

Ok I understand that it just looked strange on the map as it shown that I overtook him in the DRS zone and was ahead of him the entire lap even someone else in the race commented after in the league chat that he thought that I had finished 3rd as well

How far ahead of him were you prior to being overtaken?  Many times, the game registers a pass while it's still in progress (credits the overtake before its finished).  There's also just enough of drs zone that may have also helped them pass you.
