You don't get new engines at the beginning of the season, instead you get a supply of new engines every 20 races. For two car leagues you receive up to 20 and one car leagues you will receive up to 10. This allows you to replace engines on average every second race, if you want to replace them more often you will need to buy extra engines with tokens.
I say up to because it depends how many engines you have in stock on the renewal date. E.g. If you have six unused engines (2 car league) and the renewal date arrives you will only receive 14 free engines to increase your stock back to 20. You need to consider this if you purchase engines.
If you do buy engines be careful, it is easy to buy parts by mistake. Read the screen prompts carefully before committing to the purchase.
