What did you try to do?
My cars produced a quicker lap time than the driver immediately ahead of me

What happened instead?
The gap between the cars got bigger even though my car was faster

It just occurs randomly during the race

Maybe they were faster than you threw the final sector?  It can happen.

I have seen the same scenario play out. Three sector times added together which should be slower than another driver end up with the aggregate time faster. At times close to a whole second different.
