Any reward system will benefit the higher performing teams, it stands to reason. Even if the reward was "dollars" if they weren't important, they wouldn't be in the game. 
Far better to reward the top 3 teams with trophies which could be displayed in a Trophy Room. This Trophy Room could not only display end of season trophies but race trophies and any other possible (yet to be added) trophies such as Driver of the Day etc. It could also be used to display the race data, so when you click on a trophy, the race data would be displayed. 
There are so many possibilities with a Trophy Room, I wish the devs would add one. 
There's even the possibility of having unique trophies for each league and a presentation ceremony at the end of the season. 

I think all you have to do is allow people to give money + other stuff to other drivers.
