I think the popularity is set at 5 at the moment so does not alter.
The more marketers you have the more income you generate.  How good the commercial manager is might also have an effect.

On this page you can adjust the markup of each item you want to sell. The higher the number the bigger the markup.  If you make it too big, and you are not a 'winning' manager you won't sell any items!  There is a balancing act between how many marketers you have and the skill of your commercial manager, with the markup and quality of the merchandise.  Just experiment and find the best balance.  It will change as you improve in the game.
