Tyre change right before race

I have seen an opponent switching Tyres after qualifying but before the race starts (qualifying with ss, start with w). 

How can I do that? I've tried to go to box immediately, but then the driver just drive to the pit after lap 1. I am using the android app.

Any help is appreciated!

Before the race start, you go to the wrench icon on the bottom right hand side of the car's menu. The closer to the race starting time you wait, the less likelihood of success. If you press "pit now" it does exactly what you just described and count as your 2nd stint.  I hope that made sense.

if the qualifying is dry and before the race starts to rain, you can change the tyre from two options: 
Going to the wrench icon at the bottom right of the car menu, or going to the wrench icon at the top left.
If it doesn't work right away, simply reload the race page and it works.
