I'm back, but only in Quick Races, and spectating a few races in all sorts of leagues, both nuubs and pros. Thing is I want to chat too.

I can't chat and that makes me sad. I'm now just some silent quick racer who probably comes off as some quiet nerd to others, when actually I am a very handsome amazeballs comedian, kidding. Years back we used to be able to chat even as spectators, to friends in diff leagues, why stop that opportunity for socializing?

So yeah, not the most constructive suggestion, but let me chat! Please! I want to trash talk people in Quick Races and say hi to people stressing out in the middle of league races like the sweaty noobs they are. Kidding, you gamers are awesome. What's a multiplayer game with such limited options to chat with other players?

Constructive P. S.; I understand banning non-league members from participating in league chat of other leagues, to curb league poaching and such. Whether I totally agree is debatable but fair enough. But I never understood the sudden limit on chat for live races. At least let us named members chat, both on public quick races and spectate mode? If there's any trouble, reporting people should suffice, wouldn't it?

What do others think? Am I alone here? Maybe...

I agree...

However, IIRC the reason given for removing the names (and later ID numbers) for spectating managers was load on the servers. I believe we were informed by Jack that this was to some degree responsible for the severe lags we used to experience back in the day.

Of course, as soon as you remove the identifier of any spectator the lunatic fringe emerge and make all manner of disgusting and distasteful remarks safe in the knowledge that nobody knows who they are. Hopefully we are now running on more powerful servers that can better handle the load and if this is the case, like you I would really welcome the return of spectator chat.

if the servers aren't powerful enough it would be nice if hosts could whitelist certain managers to allow them to send messages as guests. The host should automatically be on this white-list. The people on white-list are supposed to be trustworthy people so o doubt they'd say anything they aren't supposed to.

If the servers are powerful enough, a blacklist would be much better and could be used to ban offending managers provided we bring back having the names of managers shown.

Maybe having both is the best way ?

Late to the replies, but ohhh, yes I can understand the POV of reducing server load. Thanks for reminding me of the lag issues before, Kev. Really trained our fabulous patience over the years. ;)

And whitelist from the perspective of wanting to reduce server load makes sense. It's just... usually in games ud have the opposite, a more or less open chat and a blacklist for those few naughty naughty people. And yes, if we are bringing more open chat back it could be a good idea to allow chat at least for named managers, bringing those names back.
