Group qualifying

What would you do when finding a higher starting position with a slower lap than the drivers behind or no lap recorded at all?

41.67% (5)
Applying a grid penalty. Starting grid determined by the fastest time recorded on track. That way drivers have to be aware
58.33% (7)
Leave the grid as it is. Regardless of advancing but later on slower than Q1 or even not recording time at all...

One full year of racing season has its grand prix weekends. The main focus here is qualifying when preparations settled on practice sessions. Group qualifying is literally common alike of F1. We know in common slowest times from 5 drivers (ex.) will be eliminated and recorded for tomorrow's race grid. On Q2 another five slowest will be done the same way leaving ten way battle to snatch pole position. Those who advance will have to record their times again simply. But here comes the discussion....

The time from Q1 has been recorded as the slowest five drivers are queued P16-P20:

  • P16: 1.17.214

  • P17: 1.17.301

  • P18: 1.17.649

  • P19: 1.17.678

  • P20: 1.17.813

Then as for Q2 the times of another slowest 5 drivers between 15 cars are:

  • P11: 1.16.768

  • P12: 1.16.813

  • P13: 1.16.954

  • P14: 1.17.220

  • P15: 1.17.415

Shootout stage shortly Q3 completed as follows:

  • P1: 1.15.677

  • P2: 1.15.700

  • P3: 1.15.851

  • P3: 1.15.901

  • P4: 1.15.943

  • P5: 1.15.978

  • P6: 1.16.116

  • P7: 1.16.347

  • P8: 1.16.410

  • P9: 1.16.511

  • P10: 1.16.616

The grid for tomorrow's race as follows:

  • P1: 1.15.677

  • P2: 1.15.700

  • P3: 1.15.851

  • P3: 1.15.901

  • P4: 1.15.943

  • P5: 1.15.978

  • P6: 1.16.116

  • P7: 1.16.347

  • P8: 1.16.410

  • P9: 1.16.511

  • P10: 1.16.616

  • P11: 1.16.768

  • P12: 1.16.813

  • P13: 1.16.954

  • P14: 1.17.220

  • P15: 1.17.415

  • P16: 1.17.214

  • P17: 1.17.301

  • P18: 1.17.649

  • P19: 1.17.678

  • P20: 1.17.813

The time recorded on Q1 by the driver who will start 16th is actually the 14th fastest. Meanwhile the time posted on Q2 for the driver who will start 15th on grid is only 17th fastest.

We do know tenths of a second make huge different on actual pace which is crucial on qualifying as the race day alone. When advancing through Q2 or Q3, the times are irrelevant or negative to ones posted on previous sessions. If you see the grid preview, you may notice that the one who starts tenth on the grid, his actual quali time can be much slower than two or three drivers behind him. Although he advances to Q3. Another one is when one driver advances on the next qualifying session, driver didn't record his lap time. But queued higher than the slower cars behind. There's another situation when lap times on qualifying is heavily affected by weather changes. But likely in general, has been said already.

If you do understand what explained and if you are the racing organizers, what would you do? Reply below, thanks!
