This suggestion is really to show what lap your car is on when you are a backmarker who is really far behind.

The lap counter in the upper left can be confusing for someone that is very far behind or a few laps down. As a backmarker, once the leader crosses the start/finish the counter suits them, not your car. That counter can stay the same, but I really think there should be a 'true' lap counter for your own individual car(s). There should be a separate lap counter... Ideally near the bottom with all the fuel and tire statistics. It would be extremely useful to know which lap you are on as a backmarker for a number of reasons. To avoid confusion and being misled. And most importantly... If you are using a strategy tool or have planned to follow it exactly, you usually know which lap you will end up pitting on. When the current lap counter is something different, it's a bit strange.

I do not know if anyone else feels this way... But when you are a backmarker, it would be extremely helpful to know what lap your car is on. Not the leader.

There's a danger that if this is implemented, suggestions will come with 'true' lap counter, because backmarkers want to know which lap the leader is on. Which I think is more relevant. If you're two laps behind, you don't have to complete those laps.

Anyhow, you can see how many laps you are behind in the lap-times-tables.

Jaap, the utility of this idea is to let those not on the same lap as the leader calculate their fuel strategies independent of the leader's lap.

Why not leave the current lap counter as-is but add a contextual lap counter to whichever car is selected in focus on the 2D screen?

As I said in my original post, the current lap counter can remain. But the current lap your cars are on should show below in the small detail / stats area at the bottom.

The laps behind in the time table isn't very useful if you arent +1 lap down. If the current lap counter is the only thing a backmarker can use, it is VERY easy to mistakenly think you are pitting on the same lap as them when in fact you are near or one lap behind. It's kind of hard to explain but generally you should be able to see which lap your cars are on, like in any game... Or even current F1 timing and scoring (e.g. Driver A = Lap 54, Driver B = Lap 53)

That is a great idea, count with my support.
