Hi Shifu,
I am using Ubuntu with Oracle Java 7. I have tried many times the default java that comes with Ubuntu and it just didn't work with the applet. Since I have installed Oracle Java 7 and followed
these instructions it is working. I haven't upgraded to Java 8 and doesn't see a reason to do so unless I am forced to.
All these are refering to the 2D viewer, I have had no issues at all with the live timing viewer.
I am not going to say it takes 3 to 5 minutes to load and I have the same black screen that you are mentionning and also the mouse cursor turning to link. So you have to be patient (I mean really patient) because on windows it loads so fast, ie less than a minute. Also once you click on the viewer you don't have to leave the tab where it opens until it is fully loaded or else you are in for another reload.
One tip I used is to wait until I hear the car noises in the background, this means that I will be able to see the track soon (well, again it is not instantaneous).
Once I can see the track and the cars, it is everything but smooth, I have like 5 fps maximum and that is without clicking on any car. If I had to that, the frame rate falls to 0.5 fps and the delay between a kers press and seeing it on the screen is close to 2 seconds.
If you are wondering why I am still using this even with all those issues is simply because Micro$ucks sucks a lot. I may also have an old laptop which can be part of the problem (which I am not sure because on a same age windows laptop everything runs smoothly) but I will stick to these because of so many benefits I can't even start to list.
Anyways, try following the instructions I posted above and let me know if those solve your problems, also downgrade to Java 7, there is no need to have Java 8 installed on your system unless you are doing some cutting edge Java development which in this case a manual unzip of Java 8 in a directory and setting it up in your favorite IDE will do the trick.
I hope this helps.
