For information, before the big update in August 2016 this game used to have contract negotiations along with quite a few other complexities which were all removed to make the game more mobile friendly in preparation for the launch of the app.
IIRC it was necessary to praise your drivers in press conferences after each race, this resulted in improving the relationship between driver and team which had the benefit of a greater chance of renegotiating contracts with a lower wage.
In reality once players had worked out the underlying algorithm and knew the minimum wage a driver would accept it just became another button pushing chore after each race.... Go to the press conference and click "This driver is the best in the world" to ensure that the driver would accept minimum wage at contract renewal.
