So my car designs have reset to their season start values despite the fact my car still somehow managed to set the third fastest time on Supersoft tires, also why does leaving the league kill my designs although no consequences are even mentioned in the exit prompt, is it a bug or something else? I also only received 18 of my design points back despite spending loads more on the designs before I decided to leave the league, is that the max I can get back after rejoining the league?

No it's not a bug. Please read this... Design Balancing system when changing leagues

But he left on 12th Feb and didn’t join another league.  He rejoined today without missing a race so surely he gets his pts back?

No, if you leave and re-join the same league mid-season you get the design reset as per the thread I posted a link to (above). The reason I know this is I've been there, done that, got the T shirt!

I mis-clicked and accidentally left PiR League in May last year (Season 11) after the 4th race and suffered for the remainder of the season.

The other league members may also need to watch out because next season the OP will have a design which is higher than the remainder of the league because of the N+1 bug. To overcome this he will need to reset his car again.

Ah ok, design points returned correlate to the races run before leaving? But wait what’s the N+ 1 bug??

The N+1 design bug affects teams who join part way through the season.

At the end of the season all cars will be reset and their start of season design will be based on the level, strength and weakness of the CD and the number of races this season. Teams that join part way through the season often receive an extra race of design meaning they begin the following season with a design advantage over the others in the league.

So next season I might end up slightly confusing the game and gaining a design advantage?

You will have more design points than you should have so at the end of the current season and before next one starts you need to leave and immediately rejoin.  This will reset your car to same design points as everyone else

More accurately you have to momentarily join another league and then re-join your original league after the final race of the season ends and before the first race of next season.

Just leaving and re-joining won't work, you'll have the same design.

Leave my current league and momentarily join a new league and it’ll reset the designs for next season?

Yes, but ONLY do it during the break between seasons. As you already found out, doing it during the season just wrecks your car design making your car uncompetitive

I mean my car starts off fairly uncompetitive even with the reset lol

That's because you are L20 and your CD is L18 and has a terrible weakness (braking). The strength (Fuel Economy) isn't particularly good either.

But now we're drifting off-topic. Your original question has been answered. If you read the thread I linked in my first post (#2) you will understand why your starting design with a lower level CD is uncompetitive and why you will continue to suffer with poor research throughout the season.

Edit:
I'm talking rubbish, the link in post #2 will not explain the CD issues you are experiencing, read this... The Mechanics of Chassis Development
