It's clear that IGP's goal is to move to 3D so why not add a proper top down view similar to 2D.
I think we are missing an important element in the live racing gameplay. Right now the camera modes are too fixed on the car, making it difficult to see what is happening in front or behind (e.g. a DRS train separating).
Another thing could be a quick camera switch (currently system is only for watching ).
Cameras could be used strategically, for example when boosting to overtake an on-board or chase view is better to judge than a TV or aerial view. Aerial is better for following a DRS train as you can see if the cars ahead are in range.

If you want to win 2D is the way to go, I’m not really sure why or who would want 3D, as you say you need to see everything to compete

Hi, did you know that you can click the minimap in 3D to expand it and see the 2D view? This might be what OP wants, an ability to go to this mode in 3D then go back to 3D. Throwing that out there just in case they weren't aware of it.
Beyond that I agree with the criticisms of 3D being hard to judge with gaps etc. but I much prefer it personally and I still use it over 2D. Yes, 2D is easier to see that big picture overview, but even that is not the most optimal visualisation possible, going on a tangent: if you were purely aiming to understand DRS gaps etc. a text table of cells lighting up in colours showing real-time gaps and whether DRS is available would be even more clear-cut. I don't think the people who like 2D would actually prefer to manage like that, even if it would give them even more control. The point of this tangent being that there is always a tradeoff between visualisation and raw data, and different people have different preferences on how much they lean toward visuals or raw data. There would probably be some people who would like to manage using only timing, and they'd probably consider themselves even more purist than those in 2D.
In terms of how much each approach to visualisation advantages or disadvantages a manager, that's what we need to balance with UI/UX design. Ever since we launched 3D, I have considered adding some kind of "DRS indicator" that indicates whether you are within range of the car ahead and whether the car behind is within range of you. I don't think this would necessarily spoil management as some suggest.

I know about the 2D view with the minimap but it is a version with less features like the option to change car/driver icon and less zoom.
My suggestion is more about having a top down view with the 3D graphics. I think anyone would say that 3D is visually better, I like it too. The aerial view is also good, but you can't zoom out as much as I'd like.
I think making clear if you get the DRS takes away one of the elements of the gameplay. It should always be the player who makes the decision and not the game that tells you.
In another note I think the DRS and Boost are a bit difficult to see during the 3D race (when being used), especially in some camera views. Maybe a floating icon above the cars could show up, even it is as an extra option.

3d I use chase...for drs and boost and often switch to the car behind.. also I use onboard to really benefit from the corner push levels..and TV when there's nothing going on
