Not sure if either I found a bug or it's just how it should work in this game, but I need some opinions and answers about this.
Some time ago I had a very promising driver, got it at lvl 11 and kept winning a good bunch of races with him. I was thinking back then, if I bring this driver to max lvl, he will wipe everyone's arses! So, after finishing training the most important areas, I started focusing on Mental. Months later, I realized my driver started struggling getting on top positions (even with a well developed car). Maybe the age was the problem, maybe by getting older actual performance starts to fall down (the driver was 28-29 if i recall right)
Now I'm in a 2-car league. I have a lvl 17 driver (following the same training program of the driver above) and a lvl 13 driver which i just signed. Both have almost same age. I was expecting the newcomer to be slower, but he's instead constantly beating the lvl 17 driver. Another big question mark on this.
Then, just for curiosity, I started to take a look at top players' drivers, it never hurts watching how pro players manage to win races, and I surprisingly found out most of the drivers had about same stats: lvl 14 and maxed out on Attacking, Defending, Physical and Speed. Some drivers had hundreds and hundreds of races and they were still lvl 14.
After a while I eventually realised that my efforts in bringing drivers to max lvl were useless, as it seems to make drivers slower than before (even if they're kinda young)... Maybe mental training is the problem? Are less-Mental trained drivers actually faster? Is lvl 14 (with speed, attacking, defending and physical stats maxed out) the "perfect" lvl for a driver? Training on a lvl above 14 does actually give any benefits for the driver?

Training Mental slows the drivers down.
You would think it would make them faster and help them pick better lines in corners & learn skills faster.
But no, it seems as if the driver get scared of driving fast. Mental training makes them very self-conscious :D
IMHO you just need to max out Attacking, Physical & Speed.
Defending seems to increase the gearing & that seems to slow you down too.
But what do I know? NOTHING :D

From my experience, Defending really speeds the driver up. Especially the focus attribute.

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks a lot!

Yes, I could imagine there were some topics about this, wasn't sure what to look for though.
Thanks everyone for the replies, I appreciate it!

Also, can anyone explain why it is that when I fully train some drivers in defending the spider diagram max's out, but other drivers are only about 80% of the limit even though they are showing level 20 for both focus and decisions?

I guess, another attribute contributes to diagrams "Defending". I dunno which.
I discovered something similar with "Speed". I think "Talent" influences diagrams "Speed".

I believe experience goes with defending on the spider diagram, low experience lowers the stat on diagram.

From what I see Defending slows the driver down, loss too much time trying to hold another driver behind you much better to have no defending & let other person drive past so you don't lose speed :P

What does technical do for a driver? Does it slow them down?
James Greer medal 5000 9 years 115 days ago
Technical improves the drivers setups & their use of KERS. Though me drivers never use KERS I burn it all out after the first pit stop. Stop training Technical once you get 10 Feedback

With "their use of KERS" you mean how much speed can they get out of the KERS or how they use it when you leave KERS control to driver?

Drivers own control of KERS. There is no advantage of extra speed just better judgement of deployment
