I just searched it up. Porpoising refers to the action of leaping out of the water to clear waves and get oxygen. Both dolphins and porpoises porpose, so do penguins I think.
Typically it happens at higher speeds where the animal can’t stop to simply rise for more oxygen. I guess some engineer saw all these cars bouncing up and down and thought of dolphins for some reason and it just caught on.
I don’t think anyone at HQ named any effect based on the number of living species in a family of animals.
I imagine that it just sounded better.. rolls off the tongue easier, i've not studied them to know which one porpoises at a faster rate but it would be ironic if Dolphins actually did. I think that either one wouldn't porpoise at a high rate like a 2022 Mercedes would.
