Everyone has most likely used one at some point when they noticed their computer or internet was starting to get slower or they thought they might of picked up a bug.
So why not share with the rest of us what you use so we can all give them a try.

The 2 different tools I use for removing boogeymen and viruses are:

AdwCleaner https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
The AdwCleaner utility will scan your computer and web browser for malicious files, browser extensions and registry keys, that may have been installed on your computer without your knowledge.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware uses industry-leading technology to detect and remove all traces of malware, including worms, Trojans, rootkits, rogues, dialers, spyware, and more.

For cleaning the computer I use:

CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
CCleaner is easy to use, one click cleaning to optimize your computers in seconds by clearing old files, cleaning the registry & it lets you disable unneeded programs at startup.

I've always resisted using these things, mainly because of my ignorance when it comes to safe sources! Figured if I was an internet genius then I'd develop a tool to "clean & protect" pcs but put the dodgy software in that program... (not suggesting that any of the above are dodgy, or that James is a criminal mastermind writing dubious software in an internet café somewhere in Nigeria, sat next to the generous member of a defunct royal family that needs my help to move the £21million that they've managed to hide) ;-)

:O I had a feeling that man sat across from me in the internet café was you lol

First two are tools I got from Microsoft a few years back when I had a problem with one of my computers. I emailed customer support to see if they could help & they sent me them in a link. I have used them ever since, free versions work just the same as paid version only free ones don't have live monitoring protecting you.

As for CCleaner that is one I found for myself. All the stuff it does you could very well do yourself it is built into the computer if you wanted to take a few hours working out where the things are to do them, Having them all under one roof I found it easier and quicker to do. :)

Young guns now days don't know how much faster computers and internet connections have got over the years.
They would thrown the computer out the window if they had windows 98 operating system and a dialup internet connection :D

The kids born after 2000 who haven't the slightest idea what dial-up is. I was born in 1993, and I remember Windows 98 in elementary school using Word. And you can probably include some late 90s kids who may have parents who could afford something faster than dial-up and they don't know what dial-up is either.

I remember picking up AOL CDs from Wal-Mart (the company that owns Asda) and getting 900 hours of free internet.

Oh my, totally forgot about those free internet access CDs. My first attempt at accessing the internet was on a totally useless windows 3.1 machine, but this was soon replaced with a newly released iMac (in the lovely bondi blue colour scheme!)

FWIW my first computer was a Sinclair ZX81, followed by a Commodore C16 and then an Amiga. I remember marvelling at how quickly things loaded with a floppy disc compared to a tape deck!

Mark, a Sinclair was one of my first computers as well, but I don't remember the model. It was tiny compared to the Commodores and IBM's we where using in school at the time. Programming in Basic and looking like a genius for completing a very primitve graphics fireworks project.

I use Malwarebytes Anti-malware too. :)

As for CCleaner, yes it's good for clearing out a lot of junk but I would stay away from the registry cleaning part of it, well actually stay away from ANY registry cleaner. They can do more harm than good, even leave you having to reload your OS.

I used to use software like CCleaner and AdwCleaner but that was back when I used to be a kid with Windows XP and was desperately trying to get my PC to not be slow. The hard drive gave up in 2006 after clunking alive for a good two or three years. Can't believe it lasted 5-6 years. I had that PC since early 2001.

I have not used any sort of maintenance software since 2006, when the home got a new PC with Vista on it.

In other news, a few days ago I found out Runescape is ditching Java. amazing.
