I believe auto-sign can be used to renew contracts without paying more or receiving less. It also allows you to extend the contract of a driver that is due to retire.

The renewing the retired driver was spotted during testing - I thought it had been fixed.

I have just patched this. Contracts will not be renewed if the driver (or staff member for that matter) is retiring. This doesn't include any which took advantage of the loophole before it was patched, those renewals will remain valid until they expire.
