had to make a new account because for some reason my username doesn't work anymore. I have been off due to computer issues for a while but does that mean all my progress is gone?

We never wipe progress and you always get to keep your whole team.
Try recovering your password using the email you used to register the old account:

I know my username and password but it comes with an error about my username.
