There are days where managers won't be able to live manage for a variety of reasons, and for those who are in it for the championship fight, days like those are bound to affect the championship.
So it could be cool for those who want it, that the league host could select the best # of races that will be counted towards the championship. Say the best 13 or 14 results out of the 17 races. Stuff like rep loss & competitors taking advantage of your absence are unavoidable, but it could keep the championship battle going in any case.
Just throwing this suggestion out there, and I'm one of those players who has been more active recently as well.

Oh, you mean like dropping manager's worst finishes.

everyone has good and bad finishes, good and bad races, that's racing you cant pick and choose the best results just because you might gain and place or two on the championship board. Face it, you had a few bad races, get over it, learn from it and come back stronger in the next race that's what the name of a racing game is. On my Xbox i play a lot of F1 but should I stop play just because i had a bad race and didn't finish in the points, oh wait i know i'll just scrub that result from the records no problem .... errr don't think so. LEARN from those bad races, hell just yesterday one manager in our League qualified in first, tried to give himself the best tires for the race, in his case Mediums (hot day) which was a mistake, he ended up 3rd had he perhaps stayed on Softs he might have gotten 2nd, see there he will learn, next time he's on that race with the same weather, then he probably wont choose Mediums.

Yeah. Like F1 pre-1990s. I agree it may seem like managers wanting to discard their bad results to some, but that's the way it'll be with this kind of scoring system. Note that I say customize-able, so it'll be according to the league host's preferences.
@Natalia: If you take a look at my HoF ranking and championship position in my league you'll realize I'm suggesting this for the opposite that you're stating. This season I was in a close championship battle with another 10k rep manager, and we were neck and neck in points until he had to miss some races because of RL obligations. I'm not saying I want this kind of scoring system for the league I'm in, but that it is possible that there could be some who might be interested in this.
EDIT: Guess it seems like a controversial idea here, but it did come to my mind due to what I've experienced as mentioned above.
