Driver sold without selling?

Hi
a friend of mine asked me to report this situation:
he had two drivers and was auctioning a third; he started the auction but logged out before the end (so he didn't have the third driver when he logged out), but when he logged in again this morning he found out that he won the auction and one of the former drivers was sold.
How is that possible?
Since he had only two drivers when logged out, he couldn't have sold the driver. There is some automatic selling when one goes in bankrupt?

Maybe he is contract is expired?

the strange thing is that he got some money, and that does not happen if the contract expires; moreover, there were no races between the log out and the next log in
