Had a weird race today where softs were burning up instantly at the British GP with overcast 14 degree condition. Hards were much quicker.  Any thoughts?

That makes no sense, unless you were using push hard. At Silverstone you can easily run grey softs with 1/5 or even 2/5 push @ 14 degrees. Mostly 1/5 though. Just keep backing off until they are grey..

That's exactly what I was doing but was able to run faster by using 3/5 push hards. In theory 1/5 softs should be quicker?

At 14 degrees, most certainly haha. You sure it wasn't 24? That might help explain things.

Trust me it is England. No 24 degrees there at the moment :) It was even overcast! I assume that Germany should be softs as well at this time right?

Usually yeah. I've found even at 19-20 degrees hards are still crap at Germany. Maybe it's not the same for everyone though.

"Jason
There is no 'serious' issue with hards. I run hards at many places. Common strats for me (at this time of the year) look something like this.

Aussie - SHHHH

Malaysia - SHHHH

China - SHHHH

Bahrain - SSSSSS

Spain - SHHHHH

Monaco - SSSSSS

Turkey - SHHHH

Silverstone - SSSSSS

Germany - SSSSSS

Hungary - SSSSSS

Europe - SSSSSSS

Belgium - SHHHH (mind you, only because I was in traffic, usually run SSSSSS or  SSSSSSS)

Monza - SSSSSS

Singapore - SSSSSS

Japan - SHHHH

Brazil - SHHHH (or maybe SHHHS)

Abu D - SHHHH (or maybe SHHHS)

I guess the best argument is tracks where hards should work (eg Bahrain) they are just pure slow even when the track is hot and places like Spain, hards are quicker than softs even in negative temperatures.

Is this advice still valid?

The post is not accurate for the number of stints because that all depends on your Suppliers (Longevety, Weight, and Power). I personally think Softs are popular though some strategies (like "SHH..." strategies) are general race strategies that can still apply these days.

But a driver's experience/level is everything.

it's still a very good guideline. But the strategy doesn't only depend on the supplies, but things like your track position and temperature as well. What I've found is that softs are better compared to hards after the update then before. What you can do then is try to do SHS/ SSH in stead of SHH on some tracks like Brazil. Hards are by no means bad, but before the supplies update they were better compared to softs.
I suggest looking at some of the high ranked leagues like the BRL for strategies that they run. You can do that by going to the league page and clicking on schedule.

Yuri is most kind.

Other highly ranked leagues which race the full distance are available. For example:
