Same problem (Ubuntu 11.10) with both Firefox and Chromium.  However, I think its a general problem with the distro and Java applets.  Has anybody gotten this combo to work - I tried installing nearly every java package combination.

I'm looking into this now.

It works fine in Ubuntu 10.4 with JRE 1.6.0_29.  I'll try with different versions of the JRE then run Ubuntu 11.10 to see if I can find a combination that doesn't work.

What kind of error, if any, do either of you get?  I assume the applet itself starts, or does it not?  Can you get any other Java applets to run?  In particular, do you get a success message from this test utility: http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Thanks.

It works for me on Ubuntu 10.4 with Java SE 7 Update 02.

Is it possible to test it without a race currently running?  I could give you more information then.  The link does check out though, but its possible I have done something since the last race that fixed it...

Hi Marc, I've sent you a PM.  It should be in your in-game inbox.

After Andrew's help I was able to stumble upon a solution.  I had to switch from the openjdk packages (which come with ubuntu-restricted-extras) to the Sun Java package via:

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

This worked for Chromium in Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10.

I get message
"Start: applet not initialized."

Installed also exactly same thing like Marc did but not working in FF or in Chromium.

Java webpage itself say that
Your Java configuration is as follows

Ventor: Sun Microsystem Inc.
Version Java SE 6 Update 23
Operating System: Linux 3.0.0-14-generic
Architecture: i386

Did not get that working. I think i need some allways working live link that i can find where the hell is problem. 1,5 hours is not enaugh time.

Edit

<body><script src="https://www.java.com/js/deployJava.js"></script>

wtf? Why is it in body area?

Mine actually stopped working a couple days after I got it working - so I don't know anymore.  You can try it though with the link: https://igpmanager.com/play/?url=race-live/1111/  (need to replace 1111 with race id).  The only catch is there has to be a race going on, but you can sort the leagues by time to find one. Then go to schedule -> race results and you can see the number of the race in the URL.

I was going to try Oracle java but have been too lazy: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/09/how-to-install-oracle-java-7-jdk-in.html.  Another possibility is to just use a more recent sun java.  Andrew suggests update 29 but you might have to manually install this rather then using the package I mentioned above.

Oh, sorry you need to add '2d' at the end.  So, https://igpmanager.com/play/?url=race-live/1111/2d

I just tried using Oracle java with the webupd8 link above and it works in Chromium (firefox doesn't seem to be working), but the graphics are all screwed up.  It seems all the menus are working though so could be used in a pinch, just don't get the pretty maps.

Good point, I'll have a look at that. I have just noticed that the 2D viewer doesn't run on Firefox with my fresh install of Windows 7 and it may be because that the script you mention is not in the <head>.

Actually I find it's normally most useful to link to https://igpmanager.com/play/?url=race-launch/1111 though it depends what your aim is of course.

I checked this out and it was just the notification missing from the top, that all free slots are currently taken. The notice should now display when you try to use it.
