One common feedback on 3D is that even in aerial view you can't know as much as in 2D and that it is hard to judge the gaps. A minimap was a suggestion even during testing but we didn't have time to add it before launch. This proposal expands on the minimap idea, combining it with real-time gap data to ensure that 3D mode can see everything that 2D can see. 2D mode would also receive the real-time gap data, so the playing field would be level.

3D - Mini map:

  • Add a mini-map visible on each of the 3D camera modes

  • When the mini-map is tapped, it opens 3D mode's full-screen 'map' view

  • In full-screen map view, provide a similarly quick option to return from map view to the 3D camera you were using before viewing the map, so you can easily and quickly toggle between the two as needed with one-click each time

2D & 3D - Real-time gaps data:

  • Add real-time gap data over cars within 1.5 seconds of the selected car that you are viewing.

  • E.g. the car in front will say "-1.234" seconds above it and the car behind will say "+1.234" seconds.

  • This will allow precise management of the gap for DRS. This will bring the data and level of insight available in 3D in to line with that in 2D, even increasing it beyond the levels currently in the game for both.

Would this proposed mini-map been in a different perspective or at the top of the screen?

Would this proposed mini-map been in a different perspective or at the top of the screen?

It would essentially be a 2D map, with circles and dots on it. A mini version of the 2D map floating over the 3D view. It would probably be located in the top right corner of the screen on mobiles and on portrait I think one potential location for it is between the two driver panels (bottom center).

Sounds like a great idea, but does it have the ability to be turned on and off? Cause on some phones every inch of space is super important

That can certainly be made a setting, yes. Like turning sound on and off.

FYI other things we are working on to improve 3D include showing cars through objects (buildings/bridges/trees) etc. from aerial view. Obviously when they are obscured it's hard to tell what is going on, and being able to see them at all times is important.

Would it not be better if just write the gap on the leader board?
Having numbers above or beside cars could get messy if there are groups of cars in front or behind.

How about a „higher“ camera in 3D, so we are able to see more of the track? Or is the actual height in 3D the highest possible?

And I forgot: a fixed camera would also be great! I mean if you adjust the helicopter like you prefer, it always will hold that view (for example allways behind the car)

I proposed this but there are technical reasons why it wouldn't be a good idea. We already know some devices are struggling and constantly updating the timing table is quite resource-intensive.

Also, I don't think it's necessary to show the gap for a whole group of cars, would it be acceptable just for the car directly in front or behind? And any beyond that you can guesstimate where they are. I also don't think the information would be that useful when the car is within a tenth of a second or two, but let me know if you think otherwise. I figure the single use for this is to judge DRS gaps.

Thinking aloud... perhaps we could even visualise where your DRS range is somehow and the cars which are within range (e.g. add some indicator to the car itself that it's within range). There are many more possibilities in 3D to do such visual indicators instead of just data.

Fixed camera is definitely on the list, I raised it with the devs today. Higher camera I am not sure about yet, also for technical reasons (we don't want to show the "edge of the world" etc.).

😂

Don't you think you should repair the game first?

Don't you think you should repair the game first?

We released 3 patches this morning before I made this thread. Perhaps we're moving too fast for you to notice. It's a blur!

The reason the real-time gap was asked for, was because of the way the wheel to wheel racing was working before changes where made. Before the car behind was showing as being in front of you on the track, but was still behind you on the leader board. This doesn't happen anymore.

But one ahead and one behind sounds ok.
As for indicators, a little green dot on the name bar. Light's up when in range and dulled out when not in range.
That way you know you're close enough to car ahead but the car ahead doesn't know!

@jack Sorry for Spamming but my brain is working actually 😂😂

It’s hard for me to explain my thinking in English but let’s try:

How about a camera which has the position exactly in middle of the track so the cars will drive around that camera. Maybe so we are able to see around 50% of the track..... hopefully you get my idea 🙈 if not I will try explaining German or draw a picture .....

So core meaning of the idea

- Camera exactly in the middle of the map
- cars will drive around that camera
- always be able to see 1/4-1/2 of the track/map

so essentially a fixed map camera?

I would say yes...., like if you do RC races in real life and you stay on a tower in the middle of the track

sounds like a good idea but feels like its just 2D but fixed

This will depends on the angle of the camera.... but it should be 3D ..... because the view won’t bo directly from above, so you will see all 3 dimensions

EDIT: I just tried to draw a picture and noticed it is maybe too difficult.... because the middle of a track/map doesn’t have allways the same distance to the actual car position...... so for example Japan if you will put a fix camera in the middle, the corner after „start/finish“ and the corner before the long straight back to start/finish will be very far away from the Camera 🙈

Also need better Kers consummation information, or maybe showing on the leaderboard infront of driver name, on 3D is troublesome to cycle through each of the driver

A see through objects option sounds like a simple solution along with real time gaps on the leader board.

Lol.... the last few races since this update I've been so distracted mesmerized by the different angles and depth perception of the game... honestly,  I'm looking forward to where igp is heading.
